Verapamil (Calan SR) Tips from Pharmacists
You only need to take Calan SR (verapamil sustained release) once a day. If you want to switch over from the immediate-release tablets, your total daily dose should remain the same. However, do not change to a different formulation without talking to your doctor first.
Verapamil can cause dizziness, blurry vision, and weakness. These side effects usually get better once your body adjusts to the medicine. Do not drive or do other hazardous activities until you know how verapamil affects you. Avoid drinking alcohol as it can make these side effects worse. Arise slowly out of bed to prevent falls. Tell your doctor if you experience severe dizziness on this medicine. Your doctor can recommend appropriate dose reductions.
If you are taking Calan SR or Verelan PM extended release capsule, you can open the capsule and sprinkle the contents on a small amount of applesauce. The applesauce should be at room temperature or cool and soft enough to swallow. Swallow the mixture immediately - do not store for later use. Follow this up with a glass of water to ensure you swallow all the medicine.
Keep a log of your blood pressure readings and bring it to your healthcare appointments. Your doctor may adjust your verapamil dose based on blood pressure response.
