Vitamin C Tips from Pharmacists
Most healthy people have adequate intake of vitamin C and don’t need to take a vitamin supplement. You can ensure enough dietary vitamin C by eating a well-balanced diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables. Notably, the vitamin C content in one medium-sized orange is enough to meet your daily requirement.
High doses of oral vitamin C can be harmful. Check with your healthcare provider before taking vitamin C (ascorbic acid) supplements, especially if you have chronic diseases.
If you have medical conditions that can affect nutrient intake, talk to your doctor about taking vitamin C supplements since your body may not absorb the vitamin from vitamin C-containing foods.
Taking iron supplements with vitamin C can improve iron absorption.
Before taking a vitamin C supplement, check the labels of all your dietary supplements to ensure you are not getting vitamin C from multiple sources.
Check the expiration date on your vitamin C supplements and discard expired pills and gummies.
Vitamin C gummies and chewable tablets often contain added sugar. Choose vitamin C supplements without added sugar if you have diabetes (high blood sugar levels).
