How should I take Xanax (alprazolam)?

Xanax comes in the form of a regular tablet, a disintegrating oral tablet that dissolves rapidly in the mouth, an extended-release tablet, and a concentrated liquid. The tablet, disintegrating tablet, and liquid concentrate are usually taken 2-4 times daily. The extended-release Xanax tablet is taken once daily, usually in the morning.

If you are taking the concentrated liquid, use the dropper to measure your dose. Then, squeeze the medication into water, juice, or semisolid food like applesauce. Stir until the medication blends and consume immediately (do not store for later use).

The orally disintegrating tablet should be removed from the bottle only when it is time to take your medication. Handle the tablet with dry hands and place it on your tongue. Once it dissolves, swallow it with saliva.

You should swallow the extended-release Xanax tablets whole with water. Do not crush, cut, or break them.

Follow the directions on your prescription label for the correct Xanax dosage and frequency. Do not take more or less Xanax or take it more or less frequently than prescribed. Do not stop taking Xanax without talking to your healthcare professional first. Abruptly stopping Xanax can lead to worsening anxiety symptoms and withdrawal symptoms. Your doctor will reduce your dose of Xanax gradually.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of Xanax, take your medication as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store Xanax at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all prescription medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any unneeded or expired Xanax. Do not flush the medication down the toilet. The best way to dispose of Xanax is through a medicine take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
