Uses

What is Xanax (alprazolam) used for?

Xanax is a prescription medication that is used to treat anxiety disorders and panic disorders. These mental health conditions can be associated with feelings of nervousness, fear, panic, or a sense of impending doom, as well as physical symptoms like sweating and a fast heartbeat. In addition, there may be other uses of Xanax, such as treating depression, agoraphobia (fear of open spaces), and premenstrual syndrome.

How does Xanax (alprazolam) work?

Xanax works by affecting the levels of certain chemicals in the brain and reducing abnormal excitement.

What are Xanax (alprazolam) doses?

Xanax is available in tablet form in doses of 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, and 2 mg. Treatment of anxiety disorders is usually initiated with a dose of 0.25 mg or 0.5 mg three times a day. The dose can be increased based on the response every 3-4 days to a maximum Xanax dose of 4 mg daily given in divided doses. Doctors prescribe the lowest effective dose of Xanax and assess patients frequently for the need to continue treatment. This is because Xanax is habit-forming and carries a risk of dependence. This risk increases with the dose and duration of treatment.
