Amlodipine-Benazepril (Lotrel) Tips from Pharmacists

  • Amlodipine-benazepril combination can lead to dehydration. Too much sweating, vomiting, or diarrhea can increase the risk of dehydration, leading to lightheadedness, electrolyte disorders, very low blood pressure, and kidney failure. Drink plenty of fluids and stay well hydrated while on amlodipine and benazepril. Tell your doctor if you have prolonged diarrhea or vomiting.

  • Do not take supplements or medications containing potassium or salt substitutes without talking to your doctor.

  • Do not stop taking this amlodipine-benazepril abruptly. This can lead to a dangerous increase in blood pressure. Your doctor will tell you how to decrease your dose gradually.

  • Lifestyle changes such as eating a low salt diet and getting regular exercise can help control blood pressure and reduce the need for antihypertensive medications.
