Doxycycline Monohydrate Tips from Pharmacists
Take doxycycline monohydrate with a full glass of water to avoid irritation of the esophagus (food pipe).
If you are taking Oracea, take it on an empty stomach in the morning, 1 hour before or two hours after meals.
If you are taking the syrup (Vibramycin), use a dose measuring cup or syringe to carefully measure the dose. Do not use a regular kitchen spoon.
If you are taking products containing calcium, aluminum, or magnesium, such as antacids, calcium supplements, or laxatives, take them 1-2 hours away from doxycycline monohydrate. Take iron products 2-3 hours away from the antibiotic.
Wear protective clothing and sunscreen and avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight.
Doxycycline monohydrate can lower the effectiveness of hormonal birth control. Talk to your doctor about other methods of birth control to prevent pregnancy.
Tell your doctor immediately if you develop severe diarrhea up to 2 months after treatment with this drug.
