How To Use Febuxostat (Uloric)

Take febuxostat tablets once a day by mouth at the prescribed dose. You can take this medicine at any time of the day, with or without food.

Read the prescription label carefully and take your medication regularly exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not change the dose or dosage frequency unless your doctor tells you.

Your doctor may increase your dose of febuxostat if blood tests show your serum uric acid levels are still high after 2 weeks.

You should know that it takes febuxostat several months to decrease the frequency of your gout flares. The number of gout flares you experience may increase during the first few months of treatment with this medication. Continue taking febuxostat even if you have more gout flares initially. Your doctor may prescribe another medication such as colchicine (Mitigare, Colcrys) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for symptom control during the first 6 months of treatment with febuxostat.

Febuxostat can control gout but will not cure the condition. Continue treatment even if you feel well. Do not stop taking febuxostat without talking to your doctor.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of febuxostat, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store febuxostat between 15-30° C or 59-86° F (at room temperature) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused febuxostat should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot consume them. Do not flush febuxostat down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded febuxostat is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
