What is Glucophage (metformin)?

Glucophage (gloo koh fayj) belongs to a category of drugs called biguanides. It is an oral prescription medication used to control blood glucose levels. Along with lifestyle changes, Glucophage is used to prevent and treat type 2 diabetes. Treatment with Glucophage can help to reduce the risk of diabetes complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, nerve damage, and eye problems.

Who can take Glucophage (metformin)?

Glucophage can be prescribed to adults and children aged 10 years and older with type 2 diabetes. Glucophage is not indicated for the treatment of type 1 diabetes.

Glucophage may be used in combination with other medications or insulin.
