Hydrocortisone-Pramoxine (Analpram Hc) Risks, Warnings, and Complications

Hydrocortisone pramoxine may cause or worsen health problems in some people. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about other treatments for your skin condition if you are at an increased risk of adverse reactions or complications from this combination topical treatment. Some of the risks of using hydrocortisone and pramoxine include:

  • SYSTEMIC ABSORPTION: Topically applied corticosteroids can be sufficiently absorbed into the bloodstream and cause problems similar to systemically administered corticosteroids. You should use the minimum amount of hydrocortisone pramoxine necessary for the shortest period of time for therapeutic efficacy.

Children receiving topical corticosteroids are at a higher risk of health complications due to sufficient systemic absorption of strong steroids, including hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression, Cushing’s syndrome, intracranial hypertension, linear growth retardation, and other disease processes.

HPA axis suppression is reversible, and recovery is quick after the steroid medication is stopped. However, sometimes steroid withdrawal can occur, requiring supplemental systemic steroids.

Various factors can augment systemic absorption of topical steroids, increasing the risk of adrenal suppression and systemic toxicity. For example, prolonged use or use on large areas of skin increase percutaneous absorption (absorption of the steroid from the skin into the bloodstream).

Do not use hydrocortisone pramoxine over large areas of skin. Also, do not use the medicine for prolonged periods without talking to your doctor. Chronic corticosteroid therapy can increase the risk of serious health problems. Occlusive dressings substantially increase percutaneous absorption of the drug and can produce systemic effects. Hydrocortisone is a relatively less potent steroid, and these risks are higher with stronger corticosteroids, the use of multiple topical formulations containing steroids, and in people requiring supplemental systemic corticosteroids (oral steroid medications).

  • TERATOGENIC EFFECTS: There are no adequate studies in pregnant patients to say for sure that topically applied corticosteroids are safe for the baby. Due to potential teratogenic effects, topical corticosteroids are Pregnancy Category C (generally teratogenic in laboratory animals when administered systemically at relatively low dosage levels or more potent corticosteroids applied topically to the skin). Therefore, topical corticosteroids are used during pregnancy only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

Precautions Before Starting Hydrocortisone-Pramoxine (Analpram Hc)

Tell your doctor if you ever had an allergic reaction to hydrocortisone, pramoxine, any of the active or inactive ingredients in topical hydrocortisone pramoxine, or any other medications. Your pharmacy can give you a list of ingredients.

Give your doctor and pharmacist a list of all the medications you are taking and using, including prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, supplements, and herbal remedies. This can help avoid possible interactions between your medications.

Give your doctor a complete medical history. Hydrocortisone pramoxine may not be safe for people with certain medical conditions, such as fungal infections (other than of the nails and skin), intestinal obstruction or perforation, peritonitis, diverticulitis, fistulas, diabetes, threadworms, high blood pressure, heart failure, recent heart attack, osteoporosis, myasthenia gravis, mental illness or emotional problems such as depression, tuberculosis, stomach ulcers, cirrhosis, liver disease, kidney disease, thyroid disease, or untreated infections.

Tell your health care professional if you are pregnant, could be pregnant, plan to get pregnant, or are breast-feeding.

Precautions During Use of Hydrocortisone-Pramoxine (Analpram Hc)

Use hydrocortisone pramoxine as prescribed. Keep all your healthcare appointments while on this medication. Avoid using occlusive dressings on the treated skin unless your doctor tells you to.

Tell your healthcare providers you are using hydrocortisone pramoxine before any surgical procedure, including dental treatments.

Call your doctor without delay if you become pregnant while using hydrocortisone and pramoxine.

Corticosteroids, including hydrocortisone, can decrease your body’s ability to fight infections. Avoid contact with people who are sick, especially with infections like chickenpox and measles. Practice good hand hygiene. Call your doctor immediately if you develop signs of infection.

Hydrocortisone-Pramoxine (Analpram Hc) Drug Interactions

Certain other drugs can affect how hydrocortisone and pramoxine work. Possible drug interactions with other medicines can increase the risk of severe adverse effects.

Give your doctor or pharmacist a complete list of your medications, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, dietary supplements, herbal remedies, and topical medications. Also, tell your healthcare professional if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use recreational drugs because some of these substances can cause serious health complications when used with prescription medications.
