How should I take Levoxyl?

Levoxyl comes in the form of tablets and capsules. You should take the medication by mouth with a full glass of water to avoid gagging, choking, or having the tablet get stuck in your throat. This medicine should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach at least half an hour before eating anything. Swallow the capsules whole - do not chew or crush them.

To give Levoxyl to an infant, small child, or adult who cannot swallow tablets, you can crush and mix the Levoxyl tablet in 1-2 teaspoons (5 to 10 mL) of water. Do not mix the crushed tablets with anything other than water, especially not soybean infant formula or other foods. Give the crushed tablet suspension by dropper or spoon straight away (do not store the mixture for later use).

Follow the directions on your prescription label for the correct Levoxyl dosage and frequency. Do not take more or less of the medicine or take it more or less frequently than prescribed. 

It can take several weeks for you to notice an improvement in your symptoms. Do not stop taking Levoxyl without talking to your healthcare professional first. Levoxyl controls hypothyroidism but does not cure it. Continue taking Levoxyl even if you feel well.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of Levoxyl, take your medication as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store Levoxyl in a tightly closed container at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep Levoxyl and other drugs out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any unneeded or expired Levoxyl. Do not flush the medication down the toilet. The best way to dispose of Levoxyl is through a medicine take-back program for prescription drugs. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
