What is Levoxyl used for?

Levoxyl is a prescription medication for oral use (to be taken by mouth). It is used to treat hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid. In people with this condition, the body does not make enough thyroid hormone. Low thyroid hormone levels can lead to symptoms such as lack of energy, excessive tiredness, weight gain, constipation, hair loss, dry skin, joint and muscle pain, sensitivity to cold, depression, and irregular or heavy menstrual periods in women.

How does Levoxyl work?

Levoxyl is a synthetic version of the natural T4 hormone that is made by the thyroid gland in the body. Levoxyl works by replacing thyroid hormone and bringing the levels back to normal. It is given to people with primary, secondary, or tertiary hypothyroidism.

What are Levoxyl doses?

Levoxyl is available in tablet and capsule forms in doses of 25 mcg, 50 mcg, 75 mcg, 88 mcg, 100 mcg, 112 mcg, 125 mcg, 137 mcg, 150 mcg, 175 mcg, 200 mcg, and 300 mcg. Oral levothyroxine sodium solution is also available under other brand names.

The average full replacement dose of Levoxyl in adults and adolescents in whom growth and puberty are complete is 1.6 mcg/kg/day (100-125 mcg/day for a 70-kg or 150-pound adult). Older patients may require lower doses (1 mcg/kg/day). Doses greater than 200 mcg/day are rarely required. Dose adjustments are based on the response (serum TSH level and thyroid levels on lab testing).
