How should I take Lovenox?

Use Lovenox exactly as prescribed. Follow all directions on the prescription label and any medication guides if provided, and ensure that you understand all instructions for proper use. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.

Lovenox is typically given once daily around the same time until your bleeding disorder improves. Lovenox is injected subcutaneously - under the skin or intravenously, into a vein. Your healthcare provider will teach you how to administer this medication properly. Do not use Lovenox if you are unsure about how to use it.

Lovenox subcutaneous administration:

• Your healthcare provider will provide proper training on the subcutaneous injection technique before you may self-inject Lovenox at home. 
• Do not administer Lovenox intramuscularly (into a muscle); Lovenox therapy is for intravenous or subcutaneous injection only.
• Lovenox is a clear, colorless, pale yellow sterile solution - you should inspect the product for any particles or discoloration before administration. 
• Prepare your injection only when you are ready to administer it. 
• You should be sitting or lying down during the administration of Lovenox. 
• Use a tuberculin syringe if you use the multiple-dose vials to ensure the most accurate volume of the drug.
• Your healthcare provider will show you the different places on your body to inject Lovenox. You should use a different spot every time you inject the medication. 
• Do not inject into skin that is bruised or scarred; do not inject through clothes, and do not inject this medicine into the same spot two times in a row. 
• After administering Lovenox, you should not rub the injection site to minimize bruising. 

Lovenox prefilled syringes and graduated prefilled syringes are for single, one-time use only. Throw it away after one use, even if there is still medicine in it. 

Do not expel the air bubble from the prefilled syringes to avoid drug loss.

Multiple-dose vials are good for 28 days; you must use the medicine within 28 days after the first puncture. Remember to put the date of the first puncture on the vial so you can discard the vial after 28 days. 

Needles and syringes should only be used once then discarded in a sharp container. If you are not provided with a hospital-grade container, you can use laundry detergent bottles, as long as they are heavy-duty and be able to close with a tight lid

Missed dose: Administer the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the amount or take more than prescribed to make up for the missed dose. Let your doctor know immediately if you have missed more than one dose or are unsure about what to do.

Storage: Keep Lovenox in the original container until ready to use. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Like any other prescription medication, Lovenox should not be shared with anyone—store Lovenox at room temperature away from moisture and heat. You should not keep Lovenox in the refrigerator or freezer. Discard the multiple-dose vials 28 days after the first use.

Unused medicine: Like other prescription medications, do not consume Lovenox after expiration. This prescription drug is intended for your use only. Unneeded medicines should be disposed of appropriately to prevent children, pets, and other people from getting to them. Lovenox multiple-dose vials must be discarded 28 days after the first use.
