Lovenox (Enoxaparin sodium) tips from pharmacists

  • You should inform your healthcare providers that you are using Lovenox, including your dentist.

  • Lovenox will make you bleed and bruise more easily. Make sure you know the signs and symptoms of bleeding so you can seek medical care immediately.

  • If you fall and hit your head, you should get medical care right away to check for a brain bleed, especially if you have severe headache, loss of vision or difficulty seeing, nausea and vomiting.

  • You should be sitting or lying down during Lovenox administration; make sure you rotate the injection site every day and don’t rub it afterward as it can cause more bruising.

  • Talk to your healthcare provider if you still have any questions about Lovenox administration; You should not start self-administering this medication until you are entirely comfortable with the process.

  • Do not start any new medication without checking with your doctor or pharmacist first, as some medicines can increase your bleeding risk even more while on Lovenox. Examples of those medications are NSAIDs, aspirin, and other blood thinners. Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions about the medicines you are taking.
