How To Use Memantine

Memantine comes in the form of an oral tablet (immediate-release), oral capsule (extended-release), and oral solution. The immediate-release tablet and oral solution are typically taken 1-2 times daily by mouth. The extended-release capsule is taken once daily by mouth.

You can take memantine with or without food. You should swallow the extended-release capsule whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or split the capsule. If you have trouble swallowing pills, you can open the capsule and add the contents to a little bit of applesauce. Do not chew the mixture and consume it immediately. Do not store it for later use.

If you are taking memantine oral solution, use a dose-measuring device (oral syringe, spoon, or cup) to measure the dose accurately. Place the medicine in a corner of your mouth and swallow it right away. Memantine oral solution should not be mixed with any other liquid. Follow the instructions on the package to close the bottle of oral solution and clean the dose-measuring device.

Take your memantine at around the same time every day. This will help you remember to take it and not miss doses.

Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully and use memantine exactly as directed. Do not take a higher or lower dose of this medicine or take it more or less frequently than prescribed.

Your doctor will probably start you on a low dose of memantine and gradually increase the dose at weekly intervals. Follow the instructions for dosage adjustment carefully.

Memantine may help control your symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, improve cognitive function, improve memory, and improve the ability to perform daily functions. It may help to slow the progression of the disease, but it will not cure Alzheimer’s disease. Continue taking memantine even if you feel well. Talk to your doctor first before stopping this medicine.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of memantine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store memantine at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused memantine should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw memantine in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded memantine is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
