How should I use metronidazole (MetroGel)?

Apply the metronidazole cream, gel, or lotion to your skin once or twice a day exactly as directed by your physician. Rub a thin layer of the medicine into your skin in the affected area. Wait for at least 5 minutes to allow the medicine to dry before using any other skincare products or cosmetics. 

Read the prescription label carefully. Do not use more or less of the medicine or use it more often than advised. 

MetroGel is for external skin application only. Avoid getting metronidazole (MetroGel) into your eyes, mouth, or vagina. There is separate vaginal metronidazole available to treat vaginal infections. The MetroGel product should not be used as a vaginal gel. If you get MetroGel into your eyes, wash your eyes thoroughly with water immediately.

Missed dose: If you forget to use metronidazole, apply the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed dose and apply the next dose as scheduled. Do not apply double the medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store metronidazole in the container it came in, tightly closed and away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep all over-the-counter and prescription drugs out of reach of children.
