What is metronidazole (MetroGel)?

Metronidazole (meh troh nai duh zole) is a nitroimidazole antibiotic used to treat redness, swelling, flushing, and pimples caused by a skin condition called rosacea.

The antibiotic metronidazole is also available as tablets, extended-release tablets, and capsules (brand name Flagyl and Flagyl ER). Metronidazole tablets are used in various doses, like 250 mg or 500 mg, to treat bacterial infections such as bacterial vaginosis, sexually transmitted diseases, and bacterial infections of the skin, blood, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, and more. Metronidazole is an antibiotic, which means it is effective against bacterial infections. Taking metronidazole for a fungal infection or viral infection will not help.

There may be other uses of metronidazole - your pharmacist or physician can give you further information.

Who can use metronidazole (MetroGel)?

Adults can use topical metronidazole. Rosacea is considered an adult disease, and therefore, this medication is not generally used in children.
