How To Use Minocycline (Minocin)

Minocycline comes in the form of a capsule or tablet to take by mouth every 12 hours (twice a day) or every 6 hours (four times a day). The extended release tablet (for acne) is taken once a day. Try to take your medicine at around the same time(s) every day. Do not open, split, crush, or chew the pellet-filled capsules or extended release tablets - make sure you swallow them whole.

Take the medicine with a full glass of water to prevent esophageal irritation (burning in the food pipe). You can take minocycline with or without food. If you develop stomach upset, taking it with milk or food might help.

Read the prescription label and patient information leaflet carefully and follow your doctor’s dosing instructions. Take this medication exactly as your doctor tells you. Do not change the dose, dosing frequency, or treatment duration without consulting your healthcare provider.

Do not stop taking minocycline until you finish the prescribed course, even if you feel better or your symptoms disappear.

Minocycline is an antibiotic and should not be used to treat a cold, flu, or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed can lead to antibiotic resistance in bacteria and make these infections harder to treat in the future.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of minocycline, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store minocycline at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets. Store the pellet-filled capsules and extended-release tablets away from light.

Unused medicine: Unused and expired tetracyclines, including minocycline, should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw minocycline in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded minocycline is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company.
