Therapeutic Uses:

  • Bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections including pneumonia, eye infections, skin infections, gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary system, and lymphatic infections
  • Certain infections transmitted by lice, ticks, mites, and infected animals
  • Acne
  • Infections that may spread during bioterror attacks, such as plague and tularemia 
  • Certain types of food poisoning and anthrax in people who cannot take penicillin
  • Nose and throat infections that may cause meningitis in others even when you are not infected yourself
  • Additional uses include treatment of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus fever, Q fever, cholera, Campylobacter fetus infections, brucellosis, bartonellosis, and granuloma inguinale
