How should I take Nexium (esomeprazole)?

Nexium is usually taken once a day in the morning, at least 1 hour before a meal. You should take Nexium capsules orally (by mouth) with water. If you have trouble swallowing capsules, you can open one Nexium capsule and mix the contents in 1 tablespoon of cool applesauce. Swallow the mixture of Nexium pellets and applesauce immediately. Do not crush the pellets or save the mixture for later use. 

Nexium granules for oral suspension should be mixed in water. The 2.5-mg or 5-mg packet should be mixed in 5 mL (1 teaspoon) of water. The 10-, 20-, or 40-mg granule packet should be mixed in 15 mL (1 tablespoon) of water. Mix the contents of the packet in water and stir well. Allow 2-3 minutes for the mixture to thicken. Then drink the Nexium granules and water mixture within 30 minutes. Do not store for later use.

Follow the directions on your prescription label or the OTC Nexium package for the correct dosage and frequency. Take your Nexium regularly at around the same time every day. Do not take more medicine or take it more frequently than prescribed or indicated on the package. Continue to take prescription Nexium, even if you feel well. Do not stop taking prescription Nexium without talking to your doctor first.

Note that OTC Nexium does not provide immediate relief of heartburn symptoms. It can take 1-4 days to get the full benefit of this medication. You can take OTC Nexium for 14 days. You should call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or get worse. If your symptoms come back sooner than 4 months after you finish a 14-day regimen of Nexium, please see a healthcare professional. You should not take non-prescription Nexium for more than 14 days. Also, do not use OTC Nexium more than once every 4 months to treat frequent heartburn unless your doctor says so.

Nexium can be given to children. You should talk to your child’s health care provider for the appropriate Nexium dose for your child.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of Nexium, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses of Nexium to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store Nexium at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused Nexium should be disposed of in a way that children, pets, and others cannot get to it. Do not flush unneeded or expired Nexium down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medications is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
