What are the pros and cons of Nexium (esomeprazole)?

  • Most people tolerate Nexium well without severe side effects.
  • Proton pump inhibitors like Nexium provide longer-lasting relief than OTC medications like TUMS or Pepcid.
  • Children, including babies, can take Nexium.

  • Unlike Maalox, TUMS, or Rolaids, Nexium does not immediately relieve GERD or heartburn symptoms. It takes 1-4 days to get the full benefits of this medicine.
  • You need to take Nexium at least 1 hour before a meal.
  •  Long-term use of Nexium can lead to an increased risk of bone fracture, low magnesium, low vitamin B12 levels, and fundic gland polyps (small growths in the stomach lining).
  • Nexium passes into breast milk and may not be appropriate for nursing mothers.
