How should I use phenobarbital?

Phenobarbital comes as a tablet and elixir (liquid) to be taken 1 to 3 times a day. You can take it with or without food. Take phenobarbital exactly as directed by your doctor. Read the prescription label and follow the directions carefully. 

Phenobarbital can be habit-forming. Do not take more of this medication or take it for a longer duration than prescribed. This seizure medication may not work as well as it did initially to treat seizures after you have been taking it for a long time. Discuss your seizure control with your doctor if you start experiencing more frequent seizures on phenobarbital. 

Do not stop taking phenobarbital seizure medication without talking to your doctor first. Suddenly stopping phenobarbital can cause you to experience withdrawal symptoms such as seizures, anxiety, uncontrolled shaking, muscle twitching, muscle weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and sleep problems.

Missed dose: If you forget to take your phenobarbital dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose at the regular time. Do not double up on the dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store phenobarbital in its original container, tightly closed and away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep all over-the-counter and prescription drugs out of reach of children and pets.
