Promethazine-Codeine Uses

The combination of promethazine with codeine is used to relieve upper respiratory symptoms such as productive cough, sneezing, and runny nose caused by allergies and the common cold.

There may be other uses of promethazine and codeine—your pharmacist or doctor can give you further drug information.

Promethazine-Codeine Mechanism of Action

Promethazine is an antihistamine. It blocks a chemical called histamine that causes symptoms like sneezing and runny nose. Codeine is an opioid. It works by suppressing the urge to cough by attaching to receptors in the central nervous system. It may also relieve pain.

Promethazine-Codeine Doses

Promethazine with codeine comes as an oral solution containing 6.25 mg promethazine hydrochloride and 10 mg codeine phosphate per 5 mL of oral solution. The recommended dose in adults 18 years of age and older is 5 mL every 4-6 hours as needed. Do not exceed 6 doses (30 mL) in 24 hours.
