What side effects should I be expecting from taking Seroquel (quetiapine)?
Signs of Seroquel (quetiapine) allergy: difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).
Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following signs:
- Suicidal thoughts, ideations, or actions
- Stroke symptoms: difficulty speaking, headache, loss of balance, weakness/numbness on one side of the body
- Uncontrollable muscle movements (the technical terms are extrapyramidal symptoms or tardive dyskinesia): symptoms of tardive dyskinesia (TD) are blinking or abnormal eye movement, lip-smacking, chewing, frowning, tongue protrusion and movement; extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) include tremor, body stiffness, and restlessness.
- Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS): High fever, sweating, extreme muscle stiffness, confusion
- Extremely high blood sugar: extreme hunger, increased thirst, increased urination, fruity-odored breath, dry skin, blurred vision
- Low blood cell count: fever, chills, cold/flu symptoms, painful mouth sores, swollen gums, skin sores
- Severe lightheadedness, like you may faint or pass out
- Fast or uneven heartbeats
- Mask-like appearance of the face
- Trouble swallowing
- Eye pain, blurred vision
Common side effects of Seroquel (quetiapine):
- Upset stomach, vomiting, constipation
- Dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness
- Lack of energy
- Increased appetite, weight gain
- Increased blood pressure
- Increased heart rate
- Dizziness when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position
Less common side effects of Seroquel (quetiapine):
- Menstrual changes
- Unusual breastmilk production in females
- Drooling
Seroquel Overdose: An overdose of quetiapine can be fatal. Go to the nearest emergency room or call the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222. You can find more information at www.poisonhelp.org/help.
Symptoms of quetiapine overdose: seizures, profound sedation/dizziness, severe drop in blood pressure, QT prolongation, arrhythmia, coma, and death.
