Directions

Follow the directions on your prescription label. Never take Seroquel in a larger or smaller amount than the prescribed dose. Also, do not take Seroquel for longer than the recommended duration of therapy directed by your doctor. Long-term use and high doses of Seroquel can result in an irreversible movement disorder. Symptoms of this movement disorder include tremors and other uncontrollable muscle movements.

Seroquel should be taken with a full glass of water. Immediate-release quetiapine can be taken with or without food. Seroquel XR (the extended-release formulation) should be taken on an empty stomach or with a light meal (less than 300 calories) in the evening.

The extended-release tablet should be swallowed whole; it should not be crushed, chewed, or broken.

You should not stop taking Seroquel suddenly; this can worsen your condition.

Take Seroquel around the same time every day. Compliance is very important with Seroquel therapy; you can use a pillbox, alarm clock, or cell phone alert to remind you to take this medication. You can also ask a family member or a friend to remind you and check in to make sure that you are taking this medication regularly.

How should I take Seroquel (quetiapine)?

Missed dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Discuss this with your healthcare provider. Do not double the dose or take more than prescribed to make up for the missed dose.

Storage: Keep the medication in its original container; keep it tightly closed, out of reach of children, pets, and other people. Like any other medications dispensed only with prescriptions, it should not be shared with anyone. Many people store their medications in the bathroom; this is not recommended due to moisture and heat.

Unused medicine: Like other prescription medications, do not consume Seroquel (quetiapine) after the expiration date. This medication is a prescription drug that is intended for your use only. Unneeded medication should be disposed of appropriately to prevent children, pets, and other people from getting to it. Your local pharmacy can provide information about medication drug take-back programs. You can also learn more about proper medication disposal.
