Seroquel is an antipsychotic medication that can be used to treat:

  • Schizophrenia in adults and children who are at least 13 years old.
  • Bipolar disorder in adults and children who are at least 10 years old.
  • Major depressive disorder in adults (Seroquel is to be used in combination with other antidepressants)

What is Seroquel (quetiapine)?

Seroquel is a second-generation antipsychotic or an atypical antipsychotic. It works by changing the activity of the brain chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin; thus, it helps stabilize your behaviors and mood. Seroquel is FDA-indicated to treat bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and major depressive disorder.

Who can take Seroquel (quetiapine)?

  • Adults and children who are at least 13 years old can take Seroquel for schizophrenia.
  • Adults and children who are at least 10 years old can take Seroquel for bipolar disorder.
  • The extended-release formulation of Seroquel, when being used in combination with other antidepressants, is only indicated to treat major depressive disorder in adults. 
  • Extended-release Seroquel XR should only be used in adults who are at least 18 years of age.
