What is Singulair (montelukast) used for?

Singulair is a prescription medicine that is used to prevent and treat chronic asthma and exercise-induced asthma. It is also used to control the symptoms of allergic rhinitis due to seasonal or year-round allergies, such as sneezing, itchy, runny, or stuffy nose.

How does Singular (montelukast) work?

Singulair is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. As the name of the drug class suggests, Singular blocks the action of c leukotrienes. Your body releases leukotrienes when you come in contact with or breathe in allergens (triggering substances).  Leukotrienes cause inflammation that leads to swelling of the lungs and tightening of the airways that lead to asthmatic symptoms. By blocking leukotrienes, Singulair decreases inflammation and widens the airways, alleviating wheezing and shortness of breath for asthma patients.

What are Singulair (montelukast) doses?

Singulair is available as oral tablets, chewable tablets, and granules. The typical dosing of Singulair for adults is 10 mg by mouth once a day. It is recommended to take Singulair in the evening.

Common Singulair doses include:

  • Chewable tablets: 4 mg, 5 mg
  • Oral tablets: 10 mg
  • Granules: 4 mg
