Directions
How should I take Tobradex (tobramycin/dexamethasone)?
Take this medication exactly as prescribed. Follow all directions on the prescription label and any medication guides if provided. Do not use it more or less frequently than your doctor’s instructions.
Do not use Tobradex eye drop or ointment longer than the prescribed duration of therapy. Tobradex contains dexamethasone, a potent corticosteroid. Long-term use of steroids can cause glaucoma, nerve damage, or the formation of cataracts.
Make sure you wash your hand thoroughly before administering Tobradex so you don’t introduce any bacteria to your eye(s). Also, wash your hands after each use.
If you have any questions about using Tobradex eyedrop or ointment, you should ask your pharmacist.
Instructions for the use of Tobradex eye drop:
- Store bottle upright and shake well before each use
- Inspect the eye drop bottle thoroughly before use. Do not use the eyedrop if it is discolored or has particles in it
- Tilt your head back slightly and pull down your lower eyelid
- Position the dropper above the affected eye, then look up and away from the dropper
- Squeeze one drop and close your eye
- Gently place your index finger on the inside corner of your eye (near your nose) for about 1 minute to prevent the eye drop from draining down your tear duct.
- Repeat this process in the other eye if both eyes are being treated
- If you are using more than one type of eye medication for the same eye, you can repeat this process with 5 minutes between different eye medications.
- After opening, Tobradex eyedrops can be used until the expiration date on the bottle.
Instructions for the use of Tobradex ointment:
- Hold the ointment tube in your palm for a few minutes to warm it up for easy squeezing
- Tilt your head back slightly and pull down your lower eyelid
- Apply a thin film of the ointment into your lower eyelid
- Close your eye and roll your eyeball in all directions for about 1 minute to ensure the ointment is distributed evenly
- If you are using more than one type of eye medication for the same eye, you can repeat this process with at least 10 minutes between different eye medications.
Do not touch the dropper or tube opening to any surface because the dropper and the tube opening are sterile. Touching them with your hands or eyes can cause contamination leading to infection.
You should not wear contact lenses while using this product.
Missed dose: Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the amount or take more than prescribed to make up for the missed dose.
Storage: Keep the medication in its original container, out of reach of children, pets, and other people. Like any other medications dispensed only with prescriptions, Tobradex should not be shared with anyone. Many people store their medications in the bathroom; this is not recommended due to moisture and heat. Tobradex eyedrop and ointment should be protected from light.
Unused medications: Like other prescription medications, do not use Tobradex after the expiration date. This product is a prescription drug that is intended for your use only. Unneeded medication should be disposed of appropriately so that children, pets, and other people cannot get to it. Your local pharmacy can provide information about medication drug take-back programs. You can also learn more about proper medication disposal.
