What is Tobradex (tobramycin and dexamethasone) used for?

  • Eye inflammation caused by a bacterial infection (bacterial ocular infection).
  • Eye inflammation that may become infected with bacteria.

How does Tobradex (tobramycin and dexamethasone) work?

  • Tobradex contains tobramycin and dexamethasone, which work together to treat or prevent bacterial eye infection and eye inflammation.
  • Tobramycin belongs to a drug class called aminoglycosides antibiotics. Tobramycin stops the growth of bacteria by preventing them from getting the nutrients they need to survive and multiply.
  • Dexamethasone belongs to a drug class called corticosteroid. Dexamethasone reduces swelling and inflammation. 

What is the suggested dosing for Tobradex (tobramycin and dexamethasone)?

Eye drops:

  • Place 1 to 2 drops inside the lower eyelid(s) of the infected or inflamed eye(s) every 4 to 6 hours.
  • At the beginning of treatment, your doctor may instruct you to use Tobradex eye drops every 2 hours; then, you may use it less often as your symptoms improve.

Eye ointment:

  • Place a small amount (about a half-inch ribbon of ointment) inside the lower eyelid(s) of the affected eye(s) up to 3 or 4 times daily. 
  • No more than 20 mL should be prescribed for the initial treatment.
