Zonisamide (Zonegran) Pros and Cons

  • There is a lower-cost generic available.
  • You can take zonisamide with or without food.
  • There is an oral suspension for people who have trouble swallowing pills.
  • Zonisamide can be added on as adjunctive therapy to achieve seizure control if other anti-seizure medications are not working well.

  • Zonisamide cannot be used alone to treat epilepsy. 
  • It is not safe for children under 16.
  • This medication takes at least two weeks to have its full effect.
  • Zonisamide may not be safe for people with a sulfa allergy. 
  • Zonisamide can be harmful to the unborn baby if used by pregnant women.
