Sodium Fluoride (Prevident) Tips from Pharmacists
Make sure you understand how to use the specific sodium fluoride product. Some gels and foams are to be used instead of and not along with your regular toothpaste.
Make sure you spit out the product after brushing your teeth or rinsing your mouth. Supervise young children to prevent swallowing.
Avoid eating or drinking anything for 30 minutes after using sodium fluoride to maximize absorption of the fluoride ions.
If you have dental crowns or restorations, read the package label carefully or ask your dental care provider before using sodium fluoride.
Do not use topically applied sodium fluoride, such as gels in a mouth tray for longer than directed, as this may cause mouth burning.
Some sodium fluoride formulations can cause temporary teeth staining. Talk to your dentist if this is concerning.
