Sodium Fluoride (Prevident) Tips from Pharmacists

  • Make sure you understand how to use the specific sodium fluoride product. Some gels and foams are to be used instead of and not along with your regular toothpaste.

  • Make sure you spit out the product after brushing your teeth or rinsing your mouth. Supervise young children to prevent swallowing.

  • Avoid eating or drinking anything for 30 minutes after using sodium fluoride to maximize absorption of the fluoride ions.

  • If you have dental crowns or restorations, read the package label carefully or ask your dental care provider before using sodium fluoride.

  • Do not use topically applied sodium fluoride, such as gels in a mouth tray for longer than directed, as this may cause mouth burning.

  • Some sodium fluoride formulations can cause temporary teeth staining. Talk to your dentist if this is concerning.
