Uses

Sodium Fluoride (Prevident) Uses

Sodium fluoride is used to support tooth mineralization and prevent tooth decay. This is possible because sodium fluoride kills bacteria that cause dental cavities, such as Streptococcus mutans, controls acid production in the mouth, and enhances penetration of fluoride ions into the tooth enamel.

Systemic sodium fluoride taken during the period of tooth development can help in preventing tooth decay in children. Sodium fluoride is therefore given in the form of oral supplementation to high-risk children who live in areas where drinking water has a low fluoride content.

There may be additional uses of sodium fluoride—your doctor or pharmacist can give you further drug information.

Sodium Fluoride (Prevident) Mechanism of Action

Sodium fluoride inhibits cavity-causing bacteria, protects against acid demineralization of teeth, and plays a role in strengthening tooth enamel by remineralizing teeth.

Sodium Fluoride (Prevident) Doses

Sodium fluoride is available in oral or topical form. The dose for different sodium fluoride forms varies.

Oral sodium fluoride solution and oral sodium fluoride tablets administered by mouth are usually taken once a day.

Fluoridated toothpaste is used to brush teeth, while the mouthwash or rinse and other dental preparations may be used after brushing teeth. The foam or gel may be applied once daily with a mouthpiece or mouth tray. Read the package instructions carefully to ensure proper use.
